10/12 UPDATE: Bay Park Conveyance Project partners, the Nassau County Department of Public Works (NCDPW) and New York State Department of Environmental Conservation (NYSDEC) announce the call for entries for the 2021 Microtunnel Boring Machine (MTBM) Naming Contest for the Project.
What is the Bay Park Conveyance Project?
The Bay Park Conveyance Project is a partnership between the New York State Department of Environmental Conservation and the Nassau County Department of Public Works. The Project will improve water quality in the Western Bays and storm resiliency by carrying treated water from the South Shore Water Reclamation Facility to the Cedar Creek Water Pollution Control Plant’s ocean outfall pipe.
What is the Microtunnel Boring Machine Naming Contest?
The Project will use an innovative digging technique called microtunneling to construct tunnels below the surface from the South Shore Water Reclamation Facility to Sunrise Highway and from Sunrise Highway to the Cedar Creek Water Pollution Control Plant. Microtunneling cuts a hole far underground and drills horizontally from a shaft, without disturbing the surface above.
It is traditional to name a microtunnel boring machine before it enters the ground. Help us by joining our naming contest! The 2021 Microtunnel Boring Machine Naming Contest is open to students in grades 6 through 8, who attend specific schools along the Bay Park Conveyance Project corridor. Participants can suggest a Microtunnel Boring Machine name through either an essay or a video. See below for more details.
